Set the APN on GPS Device Using a Hologram SIM Via SMS

My employer has been looking into using Hologram SIMs with their tracking devices (Amacam AM-T22) and assigned me with the task of activating the SIMs.

As it turned out the real challenge was setting the APN on the tracking devices themselves after inserting the SIM cards.

I had found their documentation mentioning that GPS trackers need their APN setting via SMS message.

And Hologram had a handy dashboard that allowed you to SMS the devices without the use of a phone.

But when I looked for examples of the SMS message I should send all I found was stuff like this:

APN: hologram
APN username: (none)
APN password: (none)
IP Address: Dynamic (using DHCP)
Data Roaming: Enabled

But not a single actual example of an SMS message in the proper format.

Until I stumbled across this review:

Which finally set me on the right track.

In the end the MSM message that I found for setting the APN was this:

APN,hologram,,#

Which resulted in the following message:

OK! for the newly-set APN to take effect, the device will reboot after 10s.

Hopefully this will make someone’s google search a bit quicker.
