A few months ago something interesting happened.
In an unusual shift from my usual duties I found myself porting a wiki from DreamHost.
I had never done this before and was told to find a free alternative.
This is what I found.
Free options:
- OurProject
- Uses MoinMoin as it’s base wiki engine rather than MediaWiki (unlike Wikipedia).
- Fandom/Wikia
- Uses a forked version of MediaWiki as it’s base wiki engine (similar to Wikipedia).
- Allows database download & backup.
- Allows custom themes.
- Miraheze
- Popular among charities (apparently).
- Easy to use.
- Uses MediaWiki as it’s base wiki engine (like Wikipedia).
- Allows database download & backup.
- Allows custom themes.
The result:
I ended up picking Miraheze because it’s free and used by charities often apparently.
