Choosing a Free Wiki

A few months ago something interesting happened.

In an unusual shift from my usual duties I found myself porting a wiki from DreamHost.

I had never done this before and was told to find a free alternative.

This is what I found.

Free options:

  • OurProject
    • Uses MoinMoin as it’s base wiki engine rather than MediaWiki (unlike Wikipedia).
  • Fandom/Wikia
    • Uses a forked version of MediaWiki as it’s base wiki engine (similar to Wikipedia).
    • Allows database download & backup.
    • Allows custom themes.
  • Miraheze
    • Popular among charities (apparently).
    • Easy to use.
    • Uses MediaWiki as it’s base wiki engine (like Wikipedia).
    • Allows database download & backup.
    • Allows custom themes.

The result:

I ended up picking Miraheze because it’s free and used by charities often apparently.
